This time of year marks the start of the huge Florence Christmas market in the Piazza Santa Croce, where you can buy traditional local items. Look out for the twelve meter tall Christmas Tree in the centre of the city.

Most Italians believe in Santa Claus, Babbo Natale, but tradition says that Christmas gifts are brought by La Befana, a good witch or by Santa Lucia. The gifts are usually opened after lunch on Christmas Day.

Don’t expect to be eating turkey for lunch. The meal will vary from region to region, but you can be sure it will be an elaborate and lengthy one. It is traditional to eat fish on Christmas Eve. You may already know pandoro, a golden bread; panettone, a golden bread filled with candied fruits; and panforte, a heavy fruit and nut bread.

Buon natale!
